Year 6 Transition

What are Art lessons like at Bedford High School?

Your lessons in Art will be quite different to what your used to in Primary school, this because they will take place in specialist Art classrooms. When you first start you will be given a sketchbook to work in and you will first learn all about the formal elements in Art, don't worry if you have never done this before. Your teacher will explain everything you need to know.

Will i need any specialist equipment?

Year 7 will be provided with an Art pack which will have everything they will need for their Art lessons. This pack will stay in school for you to use in your Art lessons only. A contribution of £2 can be made towards an art pack.

How many Art lessons will i have?

You will have 1 lesson every week of Art on your timetable.

Are there any Art clubs i can join?

Yes! We have lunchtime and afterschool clubs where you can try new things e.g Photography, sculpture, printing, painting and animation. We also encourage students to enter competitions and take part in set design and prop making for our annual shows.

How is my work assessed in Art?

In Year 7 you will be given lots of verbal feedback. Your teacher till explain and show you how to improve your work as you progress. You will also be given an assessment sheet where you can assess your own work and recieve teacher feedback to help you understand how to improve.

Do i get any homework in Art?

Homework is set once every 2 weeks. This gives you enough time to complete practical tasks to a high standard and practise the skills you have learnt during your lessons. You will also recieve theory based homeworks, called Knowledge Organisers, which will help you strengthen the skills you have learnt.

How can i prepare over the Summer for my Art lessons in Year 7?

It doesn't matter what materials you use, as long as you stay creative over the summer. Try to draw places you have visited, people you have seen or even keep a scrap book of your summer. Your teachers would love to see any art work you can produce. Also please see our Art transition task below, to get you started:
